The tThree Graces
It had to be done! This is perhaps the most famous view of Liverpool and was created a World Heritage site in 2004. Liverpool was awarded European City of Culture in 2008. There is so much beautiful architecture to blip in Liverpool, both old and very new and yet they seem to blend together seemlessly The new buildings often reflecting the old. Amazing.
The Royal Liver Friendly Society Building was constructed between 1908-12 and was designed by Walter Aubrey Thomas . It is a Grde 1 listed building and has two clocks bigger than those of Big Ben. It is said that if the mythical Liver birds fall from the building Liverpool will fall which is perhaps why they are so well anchored down. The female bird, it is said, is looking towards the sea to welcome home Liverpool's sailors and the male bird looks towards the city to protet it or it is looking for a pub!!! The steel contruction of this building was later copied in the construction of skyscrapers.
The Cunard building was built between 1914-16 and is a Grade 2 listed building. It was the headquarters of the Cunard Line Shipping Company.
The building on the right is the the former home of the Mersey Dockside Harbour Board (The Port Authority).
We had intended to visit the RC Cathedral today but didn't, so we have an excuse to return to Liverpool at some stage in the future We did however visit the Maritime Museum and were amused by the Super-lamb-bananas along the Pierhead and around the Museum of Liverpool Life. We hope to post some more pictures on our folio in a day or two.
