Silver fox
My first day on the farm.
I'm up early learning the ropes. Walking down the hill past Christina returning the cows to pasture from milking, past the chicken house for the youngsters, and down into the garden. Rows and rows of delectable vegetables glowing in the bright slanted light of early morning. Today was a potato day. Russet, redskins, and fingerlings. Digging my fingers into the earth to pull out the stalks by the roots and behold the bizarre bulbous orbs hanging pendulously below. Quite like some treasure chest game hunting for potatoes in the dry soil. Hoarding your booty and separating between pretty for sale in the market and the blemished for home use. By days end we had harvested about 600lbs!
After the first day I still had energy and borrowed a bike. 'The new guy has energy' they said. A promising sign. Biking a few miles distant to the southern tip of the island. A state park now where an old military fort once existed. Biking through long fields of golden late summer high grass sloping down to the rocky driftwood piled shores and deep blue waters of the sound. Along the way I caught the gaze of this silver fox in the tall grass by the roadside. A good omen no doubt.
