Quake Dogs

I took a walk to the Botanic Gardens this afternoon to see the flowers as it was a lovely day in the city. You could see sea mist on the hills and around the coast, we were in sunshine.

When I arrived at the gardens I noticed a lot of poeple around the Peacock Fountain. Then I could hear a cry from a little duckling. The mother had got out along with nine of the ten ducklings. The mum was distressed calling to the baby, people were trying to get the little one out without success. Then a woman glided the the mother duck towards the pond and the little ones followed. In the end all were safe swimming around again as a family. On my way back I noticed they were all walking around the gardens again.

The flowers were looking amazing and I thought that would be my blip for the day, until I came across the Quake Dogs book launch at the Pallet Pavilion.

Quake Dogs is about the canine heroes and victims of Christchurch’s earthquakes are immortalised in a new book by Laura Sessions and Craig Bullock.

Quake Dogs tells the moving stories of 84 dogs, including Guinness, the Irish wolfhound who was awarded a New Zealander of the Year local hero award for his work with the Student Volunteer Army, and Nemo, a 13-year-old alsatian beagle cross with a special gift for predicting earthquakes. Author Joe Bennett contributes to the book with a moving tribute to his dog Blue, who was so traumatised by the quakes he spends much of his time hiding in Bennett's car.
