Inside and outside letters

Last week I found a lovely old needlework book in a charity shop. It screamed out to be re homed with me. This evening was the first time I've had chance to sit and 'read' it. I hadn't got very far when I found this section on monograms. I had never considered it before but there are charts for inside and outside letters. Is it Christian name initial on the inside and surname on the outside?
