Hints of ancient history..

I have enjoyed the sunshine we have had this afternoon.. I hadn't realised just how much I had been missing shadows!!

The view across the valley in late the afternoon sunshine shows up the ancient ridge and furrow fields .. compared to the modern farming on the near side of the valley. I believe that the earliest ridge and furrow fields are just post Roman and show the wonderful curve which is the result of the oxen pulled plough being one sided. They would have used up to 8 oxen in 4 yokes to pull the plough so the curve came about as they had to turn the oxen at the end of the furrow. Whilst these ridges are not that high (perhaps 2 foot) apparently when they were being tilled they may have been up to 6 feet high!!The furrows between the ridges were helpful for drainage and perhaps marking out one farmers land from another.

Its the Weekend !!!!
