Not red velvet

The one thing I really wanted at my wedding was a Red Velvet cake. I am not one for the tiaras and color co-ordinating the napkins and centerpieces - heck, I got my dress at a charity shop the day before. But I wanted a Red Velvet cake.

Husband found a local baker and the baker said sure, no problem. But it wasn't a Red Velvet cake. It wasn't even properly red. That's the part EVERYONE should be able to get right!

I'm now thinking that proper Red Veovet cake might just not be available in the UK. But I am on a quest to find it.

First stop: "red velvet" cupcakes from Sainsburys.

It is not red velvet. It is a chocolate cupcake with some red food coloring, a red wrapper and white icing. There is no tanginess, the icing is just supersweet - not even creamy in texture - and the cake itself is insufficiently red. I had a bit with no icing to make sure that it wasn't just being overwhelmed by the terrible saccharine icing, but no. This is not red velvet. This is a chocolate cupcake in a red wrapper.

The quest continues.
