Viking Down....
After yesterday's surprise discovery of two aircraft crash sites, today brought a third.
I can't emphasise enough how rare this is. Never before on an archaeological walkover survey has LH found a crashed plane, and now he has three in two days.
This is the remnants of a Vickers Viking which crashed in April 1948. The plane went down on the way to Glasgow Airport from Heathrow (although neither was called that at the time). The pilot failed to locate the outer landing beacon and began his descent too far west. All 16 passengers and 4 crew escaped serious injury and were rescued after 2 managed to hike off the hill.
Incredible place.
Do have a look at www.aircraftsites-scotland.co.uk.
