Between fen and mountains

Roc Colom

Today was a special day. We decided to walk to the Roc Colom. The walk was over eight hours, 20kms and up to 8,000 feet and involved walking into Spain. The majesty and grandeur of the mountains were awe inspiring and once above the tree line, the views were magnificent. By lunchtime a few clouds had bubbled up but they only enhanced the drama of the scenery. We did not see a great deal of wildlife, an eagle, a squirrel, a fox and numerous butterflies. I was hoping to see more isards but they are very elusive. On the way down, we stopped at the Allemany refuge and met a German 'survivalist.' He was staying there for a week living mostly on berries, tisanes and fungi as well as a little rice and pasta. He had various concoctions brewing on the fire and he offered us a hazelnut infusion and gave us a handful of his lichen to boil up for breakfast tomorrow. He was proud of the fact that he could stew up his coffee grounds several times to make a palatable drink. He shared some with us and I cannot say I was impressed. Tonight, I am aching and tired so I think an early night is in order.
