Honeysuckle

The honeysuckle on the back fence has been full of red berries for a couple of months now – over the past couple of days this one flower has emerged.

Honeysuckle is a plant that is sometimes called “woodbine” which Shakespeare refers to in A Midsummer Night's Dream: Puck knew a secluded bank ‘quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine'.

There are many species of honeysuckles and in most species the berries are mildly poisonous, but a few (notably Lonicera caerulea) have edible berries.
