For a Tall Story
I was cycling past Andreas Church this morning and I was reminded of a story that is well known locally.
When first built this Church had a magnificent bell tower with a tall steeple. It could be seen from miles around.
However at the time of second world war an aerodrome was built at Andreas. It was quickly discovered that the magnificent tower was likely to cause danger to aircraft landing or taking off.
It being war time the top of the tower had to be dismantled pretty quickly. The stones that were taken down were placed to one side so that it could be rebuilt to its former glory at the end of the war.
At the end of the war they went to look for the stones and found that they had disappeared!
As a result, to this day, the tower retains its half-finished appearance with a top that looks like an after thought.
