The Icelandic Sagas - Don't go chasing waterfalls

We left Reykjavik today and travelled south towards Vik to do two main waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. We came over a mountain pass and could barely see with fog and rain so I was wondering about the wet weather gear but by the time we got to the first one, Seljalandsfoss the sun was peeping through the clouds. This waterfall is at the base of the volcano Eyjafjallajökull which of course everyone will remember for it's eruption in 2010 causing chaos to flights with the ash cloud. This one you can walk behind and although unimposing on arrival, it improves the closer you get.

On to a delicious bowl/s of soup at Annas hotel and to the next waterfall, Skogafoss and testing your lung function climbing to the lookout at the top. Again, another very impressive fall.

In the afternoon we went to the beach at Vik to see the sea stacks. It has the most amazing black beach, actually with the volcano, all of the beaches around here seem black. The white foam of the waves causes the most beautiful patterns, I must look up the stacks but I suspect that they are some volcanic or erosive type formations. Pinnacles rising up from the sea. Then we drove around to the cliffs where this lighthouse was. The amazing views in both directions of the coastline. This is I suppose looking westish although I have completely lost my sense of direction going from the Southern hemisphere to the Northern. There were some smaller islets like the rock formations of the 12 apostles here. Just amazingly beautiful and a must see for any visitor to this country. I was going to post a waterfall but this is the place that took my breath away today.

A nasty weather front was on it's way so tomorrow may be a bit quieter. We shall see. I wonder if the Icelandic weather forecasters are any better than ours.

The group seems nice. There are 4 Aussies, 2 South African, 1 Turk and two Brits. Dinners so far have been very loud and raucous but they all have serious equipment and are very keen photographers.
