Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

The day was not all wasted...

Up and ready for my man with the removal boxes at 8am, just in case he came to me first. The time slot was 8am - midday. I got him to repeat it, after the mix up with the last delivery.

It was a glorious day, but I was trapped inside and paced around all morning… No sign of him.

Then at 11:45 I rang the firm.

‘Oh, no. You’re not down for delivery today!’ Aaaargh! Not again!

Anyway, after a heated discussion, the chap left in the office to answer the phone agreed that he’d come round himself right away. Poor lad, it wasn’t his fault that the idiot who confirmed the times and the day ('Tomorrow'!) clicked on the wrong date on the computer.

We then set off to see my bro and sis-in-law and from there were called in at an out of town retail park to look at sofas. Don’t ask…

It was about 20 degrees and gloriously warm. The shops were absolutely mobbed. Why? Eventually, after much whingeing on my part, we abandoned the sofa browsing (have you any idea just how many types of sofa there are now?) and set off east.

We whizzed along the motorway to Haddington and found the Riverside Pub, which we haven’t been to for years. What a smashing setting - in the sunshine, by the river. There JR tried a Kaleidoscope soda - a mixture of strawberry, orange, basil and balsamico. It’s an Edinburgh company, the Roots Soda Co. It smelt really nice.

I tried a Camden Hells lager and it was rather nice too. I like to support wee new businesses…

From there we headed to the coast for the drive home. Oh look! We’re at Port Seton. There’s a famous fish and chip shop there that we keep meaning to try… So we did. And it was the best fish and chips ever. The serving was HUGE. In fact, JR and I, both with healthy appetites, shared a fish supper. The fish was great - thin crispy batter - not huge amounts of batter with no fish in it. No wonder there was a queue a mile long. So glad we waited.

The seagulls are pretty polite at the harbour too. There was a big sign saying not to feed them, but they didn’t even come near as we sat on the bench, enjoying the warm evening, looking at the wee harbour and the pink sky over to Fife.

So the annoying start to the day, and the time wasted in a sofa shop, was more than made up for by treats and scenery. We didn’t stop at Luca’s for an ice cream on the way back - a Magnum awaits in the freezer.
