The Tower of Our Lady
Aunt Bertie visited us today and we surprised her with a tour along many points of interest in our town Amersfoort, including a boat tour through the canals.
Eye catcher: 'The Tower of Our Lady', a church tower in Amersfoort.
Bottom left mrs. Nano and my aunt.
For those who like to know:
The Late Gothic building is one of the most eye-catching monuments in town: 98,33 meter tall, and the third highest church tower in the Netherlands. Construction started around 1444 and was finished around 1470. The catholic church that belonged to the tower was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in the 18th century, when in use as military gunpowder storage in a prostestant period.
The middle point of the Dutch grid reference system (set up around 1900) is situated inside the tower. The coördinates where also called Amersfoort coördinates, or 'the middle of The Netherlands'.
