Plant Galls
These are azalea galls, but there are lots of others -robin's pin cushion on wild roses, for example. A minute egg laid in the bud hatches, and by some miracle changes the nature of the leaf so that it provides food and shelter. You can see them under a powerful lens. Also other creatures taking advantage of the conditions, and preying on the gall makers!
The snail was also sheltering!
