"I am here"
This is Jamal and if you look at the second set of windows from the top of the building behind him, you will see another portrait of him on the right.
This is because Jamal lives in Samuel House, Haggerston. As a council block scheduled for demolition, the residents were dismayed by the orange boards erected on windows and doors as their neighbours departed.
The idea of covering the boards with the portraits of remaining residents was the idea of artists living inside.
When I first saw this building I imagined the occupant's protesting about the building's demolition. However Jamal told me they would all be happy to leave. Their home is in very bad shape. Sadly, it seems they are all to be rehoused in different parts of the borough, so the project which brought them all together will sadly split them apart.
