Toots in Solitude

North Berwick Sands

I am so, so lucky to have all these wonderful beaches on my doorstep, well, at least close by.

A few Sundays ago in the late afternoon I found a mobile phone in Haddington, in the street. The police station wasn't open and I reckoned the owner would soon be ringing the number when they realised their loss.
It was a top-of-the-range Samsung.
I took it home and if the owner didn't ring it by the morning I would hand it in to the lost property in the morning.
Late that evening, sure enough ringing ensued from this mobile and I slid my finger along the answer icon on the screen.
"Hello" I said.
"This is the person whose phone you've got" said an accusatory female voice.
"Oh good", said I, a little miffed at the insinuation that I may be a thief. "Where do you live so I might return it?"
"Haddington"
"Are you free tomorrow morning and can you give me your address"
"I leave for work at 12, so any time in the morning"
I duly went searching out a maze of houses and flats at 11am the next morning and pressed a stair buzzer but got no response and eventually got into the stair and rang the doorbell at which sound a dog inside started barking.
I waited and waited.
I knocked on the door, dog barking again, and waited and waited.
I knocked one more time with a bit more vim and heard laughter and doors opening or closing. Then the front door opened, an obviously nude young male popped his head round the door, said, "Is that the phone?, took it from me and shut the door.
I was rather non-plussed to say the least.
