What a beautiful Fall day it was. I took a short ride to find this covered bridge spanning two towns and crossing the Contoocook River. The near side is Greenfield and the far side is Hancock. It is of relatively new construction (1937). The original bridge at the site was built in 1852 but in March 1936 it was damaged beyond repair by a disastrous flood. The original builder was Charles Gray of Hancock and the replacement bridge (with all the latest bells and whistles of strength and steel reinforcements as timber connectors) was constructed as a Federal Emergency Relief Administration project by a local construction company and designed by Henry Pratt of Antrim (about 10 miles away). In case you were wondering, the purpose of the covered bridge is to protect the wooden structural members from the effects of rain, snow and sun. An uncovered wooden bridge has a life span of about 10-15 years, according to Wikipedia.
