Vanishing America I
This will not win me any accolades from the Historical Preservation Society brigade.
It's not all about farms, covered bridges, rustic barns and the like that feature so prominently on the picturesque calendars and greeting cards.
The harsh and hazardous reality is somewhat different. It's what replaces the farms etc that should be of equal or in this case greater concern.
Only fifteen years ago this was part of a farm. In fact it was a wooded area complete with many different birds and animals. Today it is a large parking lot { Joni Mitchell was quite right ! }. From the front you see a spotlessly clean supermarket various small stores , the obligatory Burger King, a gas station and a car dealership.
The rear shows the reality of this so-called progress. This is the back of the supermarket and I couldn't get any closer to take this photograph because of the stench. Smell is too kind a word. Plus it was close to 100° with very high humidity today.
Garbage is pushed from the supermarket through the chute in the wall and into the rusting container which is emptied when full I suppose. But the problem is the mess that is made when the container is changed.
It is never cleaned up. The dark shadow under the container is in fact a living ooze that could feature in any horror film.
Rotting food attracts foxes, skunks, opossum, rats and raccoons just to name a few. The next stage is these animals get diseased and become a danger to their species, not to mention us. Rabies is not uncommon but the local authorities will rarely admit it.
As I said I'll not win many friends locally with this photograph .......
