I love washing. I adore my American washing machine and still marvel in a childlike way that you can put in dirty clothes and, hey presto, they come out clean. We hand washed when I was growing up, though we had a spin-dryer. I remember my Aunt Margaret saying that if you ever felt down, a load of washing was the answer - and this has stuck with me. Hence my ever full pulley and lines of flapping shirts. In Germany they have lauderettes with bars and music so that young things can socialise while they do their smalls. How very civilised - though I'm not sure our corner of Scotland is quite ready for it yet! Hope you like this
