Knossos
Today’s cultural expedition took us to Knossos, 3 miles South of Hiraklion, Crete’s capital.
We may be a bit cultured out, but I found Knossos a bit of a disappointment. It’s quite awesome that the discovery of this site by Sir Arthur Evans in 1900 proved the existence of the once mythical ancient Minoan civilisation. The fact that the first palace was built here in 2000 B.C. is quite mind blowing.
Unfortunately Evans went on to theorise much about the huge palace, making assumptions about who lived where, what rooms and vaults were used for, and where the ceremonial processions would parade. That’s fine as a theory, but he went on to reconstruct areas according to his vision, and today it’s difficult to see where ancient Minoan ends, and modern rendering begins...
Many Cretans believe that Knossos was the site of the famed battle between Theseus and the Minotaur in the Labyrinth (isn't that a myth ?... :-)
