Mizen Head
This is the very south west tip of Ireland. Next stop America. The rocks are fantastic not only in their formation but also in the many colours on them. Lichen is rich and colourful here. We saw lots of gannets flying above the ocean, waves that as they crashed into rocks were a translucent turquoise, Beautiful inaccessible little bays, seals, and the weather was fabulous and clear.
Guglieimo Marconi came to the Mizen peninsular in about 1900 and tried to get a radio message across the Atlantic but did not have success. in 1904 Marconi entered into a contract with the Commissioners of Irish Lights and his company put telegraph equipment and aerials onto the Fastnet rock.In 1904 a ship broke a shaft 80 miles out from The Mizen peninsular and it was fitted with Marconi equipment. Soon hundreds of messages were streaming back and forth from the ship, help was sent immediately and the ship was soon back on course, Marconi's invention had taken much of the fear out of the sea.
We had a great morning at Mizen Head
