Spinalonga

Today we went to Spinaloga to see the Island made famous by Victoria Hislop’s book The Island.
Spinologa has a long history as a Venetian and Cretian defence fortification since the 16th century, but the real interest that keeps the tourists coming is the Island’s use as a Leper colony from 1903. People suffering from leprosy were confined here until as late as 1957. It’s a fascinating place with little houses and streets, where you can imagine people making their life and homes, but is now eerily deserted.
You can be assured that following yesterday's adventures we made sure we had plenty of money petrol and water before we set off!
