Sustainable Harvest
It was the Harvest Celebration at church today, and we'd decided to do things a little differently this year. No more food display, we decided to make it a bit more sustainable, to help people to grow their own food rather than just donating some food in a one off gift. For the last 4 weeks, the young people have been saving up their small change and also did a 1 hour wheelbarrow challenge relay. They all brought along their money today, and I did a mad count at the back of church. Our target had been to raise £55, as the church had promised to double what the young people managed to raise. The sum was set as being half of the costs of a donkey and cart from The Leprosy Mission's alternative gifts catalogue - Gifts for Life. £110 buys a donkey and a cart to help a family farm and take their produce to market.
I am extremely proud of the young folk as they raised not £55, but £136.32, which, once doubled, means that they have helped not one family, but three, by buying two donkeys and carts, and an additional donkey. Very impressive indeed - and they had a lot of fun doing it!
