Whitby was chock full of pirates today. We never did find out why although I suspect they were up to no good. That's pirates for you.

We drove the few miles to Grosmont and caught the North York Moors Railway. I love a good railway and the NYMR didn't disappoint. Quaint, old fashioned stations, beautiful scenery and plenty of time to relax and think.

Travelling through ancient moorland and forests made me think a lot about how hard it must have been every day for our ancestors just to survive. My brain seems to spend so much of its time agonising over the big questions: why are we here and what's the point of anything, and it was good to be reminded that there doesn't have to be a point. We are individually so insignificant, we are born, we live, we die, jjust like all those before us; it's ok to not have it all figured out, it's ok just to be.

After so much existential navel gazing I should also record that I had jelly and ice-cream for tea tonight. At least I don't have to live off my wits to survive ...
