Durrus and 16-veg
We slept in and didnt start the day until 11am and headed for Durrus. First we stopped on the Goats Path to look at a 'chapel of ease' that is now for sale. It happened they were repairing a stained glass window damaged by vandals and told us it was for sale for 195€. Not bad and right on the coast.
We continued to Durrus and had the pleasure of being detained by a clabber of cows along the roadway being moved back to their field. We hoped this would be just the the first. T had a sudden urge for an irish sweater so we stopped at a charity shop and the two lovely seniors there suggested we go to Glengariff and visit Quils.
Chicago friends recently purchased a full set of dishes as a 20th anniversary gift to themselves from Helen Ennis the potter at Dunbeacon so we stopped in as it was just outside the village, She has a lovely studio. I bought two mugs, one for said friend and one for myself. T was unusually disinterested because while I was oohing and aahing the pottery he was discovering a rather large dent in the hire car.. much distress. After a closer look though we determined that it had been there a while owing to several rust marks.
Back to the Gateway Cafe at Durrus for a bit of lunch where a clutch of local women were knitting, and then a quick stop at our cottage before heading to Glengariff. Not a far drive but a bit of a disappointment. It wasn't really a market town, mostly restaurants and Irish crafts shops for tourists. Ah well, we stopped at the golf course on our way back. T was impressed with grading of the course and how difficult it would be to land the ball without it rolling off. We were both inexplicably a bit off today, so we headed home for tea which always helps.
Started our evening at Crowleys where two engaging gents suggested we try the Beamish which was quite good.
Dinner at at The Snug. We both had fish and it was very very tasty but we burst out laughing when the two plates of veggies arrived - each had four huge scoops of root vegetables (and I love my rutabagas and turnips) and mind you the fish was solidly planted on a bed of mash. If you have ever seen the Christmas Lunch episode of Vicar of Dibley you will understand - 16 veg!
We found out later that Glengariff has a stunning park - our loss.
