Hummingbird Hawk Moth

The Hummingbird Hawk Moth, Macroglossum stellatarum, is a species of the butterfly family, lepidoptera, and has an unusually long proboscis which is curled in flight and only extended when the moth hovers - like a hummingbird - near a flower from which it wishes to extract the nectar. I have never seen one in the UK, but there were certainly plenty of them around the Buddleia by the swimming pool on this first really hot day of our break.
