Rower 2013!

This has been our final morning in Knoxville, and we soon head to the airport to return to Albuquerque. There is a sculpture in this city that I simply had to blip!

The poor old rower appears to be pulling along the sidewalk. He's going nowhere as he sits in his boat in downtown Knoxville . and that's certainly somewhere!
Others suggest that maybe he has lost his way from the nearby Tennessee River.

“The Oarsman” is in fact a bronze sculpture by David L Phelps. It was installed in downtown Knoxville, TN in an open plaza on the corner of Church and Gay Street in 1988. It has become a favorite landmark for the community and is much photographed by tourists.

Most people have no idea why this unknown man is rowing a boat in the brick sidewalk - in the centre of town. It signifies the embrace of humor and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Row your boat.
