David Douglas

We go Dawyck Garden, part of the Royal Botanical Garden group, to see autumn colours, or the azaleas in the spring and any time between as takes our fancy, such as today.

A recent introduction is this 10-foot tall statue, carved in situ by Rodney Holland from a storm-damaged 180-year old beech tree (Fagus sylvatica). It represents the Scottish born botanist David Douglas, he who collected many new species from along the Columbia River, including Pseudotsuga menziesii, later known as the Douglas Fir, a fine example of which he is viewing through his telescope.
