I had to transfer some money and walking through the centre of town it struck me again that though most of us have been tightening our belts, accepting austerity as for the good of the nation, the banks don't seem to have been following suit.

Look at Barclays for example. They had the first and biggest of the refurbs, the ground floor has been made open plan, an enormous feature staircase has been punched through to the first floor and the first floor has been extensively remodelled.
