My first scuba dive!

A big treat today, a lovely present. For a long, long time I have wanted to try scuba diving. Today was the day! Collected from the hotel at 8.15am, half hour drive to the beach at the Sheraton Hotel and a bit of form filling at the Aquarius Dive Centre. I was the only one on the introductory course so I spent the first two hours on my own watching three sessions on the video, talk about information overload!

I then collected my kit and went to the swimming pool. I had about 20 minutes of relaxing in the pool waiting for the instructor and then a 20 minute lesson and my first experience of breathing under water. It was then straight out of the pool – easier said than done with the weight of the equipment – and on to my first dive in the sea. My instructor was great and it was amazing to actually be diving so soon. We went to a depth of 12m and swam through the coral. At first I was too busy concentrating to notice my surroundings but then I suddenly realised where I was and what was around me – wow!

We were down for 25mins and it was all over far too soon. Getting out on to the jetty was an interesting experience. I didn’t have the strength for all the extra weight and needed the help of two strong guys. My legs then gave way and I collapsed at their feet! They very kindly relieved me of the heavy equipment and said they would carry it back for me, I would never have made it otherwise!

It was a fantastic opportunity and a dream come true!
