Numero Uno on the Metro Lot
Finished reading a biography of Judy Garland this afternoon. I am fascinated by the whole glamour of the filmindustry in the 1930's and 40's. So many fabulous stars; Clark Gable (numero uno, and loaned out against his wishes for Gone With the Wind) Bette Davis, Judy, Gary Cooper, Olivia de Havilland and so many more . Fantastic times.
Feeling in a retro frame of mind, I remembered Sywell Aerodrome just down the road.
This is the hotel, a real Art Deco treasure that sits on the airfiled. It's a treasure trove of design and inside is even better.
During WWII, activities at Sywell included flying, training and repairs to Wellington and Lancaster MK2 four engined bombers. RAF and Allied airmen trained here throughout the war.
The aerodrome still continues to operate privately and whilst there was little activity today given the weather, you can have lessons in light aircraft.
It's an incredibly evocative place and I could almost hear Rhett say 'my, dear, I don't give a damn'
