Dangerous Women

Laura Earle and I watched Thelma & Louise together. I've seen it many times, but this time I noticed how little violence there is in the film. This is very important in a dramatic work and this movie is, to me, one of the greatest-ever feminist statements.

Only in the early scene where Thelma is sexually assaulted, and Louise kills the man, is there violence on the screen. Elsewhere are drawn guns and the threat of violence, but no physical harm occurs.

In this scene, Thelma repeatedly apologizes to the policeman as he is commanded to get in the trunk of his car. Earlier she very politely robs a convenience store.

My favorite scene is when the duo punish a trucker for having harassed them by shooting up his truck, causing it to explode in a huge fireball. He falls to his knees as the women drive in circles around him, "You bitches from Hell!" It is very similar to the scene in Euripides' play Medea, when Jason screams impotently at his conquering wife, as she (Medea) exits in a chariot pulled by flying dragons.

I and Laura Earle really love that stuff.
