Maintenance Men

An awful rail tragedy has struck the city of Canterbury. A passenger train carrying more than 150 people plunged 20 meters into the waters of the Stour river when a brick viaduct failed. The 8:10am train from Canterbury East station travelling towards Faversham and London consisted of six carriages. The disaster is being blamed on lack of maintenance of the rail infrastructure. The railway viaduct, known locally as "the arches" was at least 140 years old. The recent long winter followed by a dry summer and heavy rain are being blamed for the accident because these environmental stresses are known to cause deterioration in brick structures. Police and emergency services throughout the South East of England have been overwhelmed by the carnage. So far the death toll is uncertain.
