Cryptic

I'm really not a big puzzler but the combination of a train journey and the Daily Express exposed me to the Crusader on Saturday and kept me scratching my head till late this afternoon. There are answers here that I don't think are correct. There are also answers which I know are correct but I have no idea why. I posted it anyway - you never know. I think the competion rules are quite quaint. Postal entries only and the postmark is your proof that you posted it in time.

And for the graphologists out there, 'Yes, I'm a leftie' ..
