Quintessential Dales

Awoke to a windy but sunny day and with a forecast of more rain for the afternoon we took an early bus to Burnsall. As we had rushed for the bus we had breakfast at the cafe before taking the path alongside the river Wharfe to the pretty village of Appletreewick with its delightful pub, the Craven Arms. Then the climb up to Simon's seat, a large outcrop of gritstone, which rises out of the heathery moorland.

We descended to the village of Skyreholme and took a path up through the limestone valley at Trollers Ghyll, with its dry riverbed, limestone craggs and trees that have rooted into them.

The showers had become more frequent and we got pretty wet on the high moor before the final decent back to Burnsall. We only just made it to catch the last bus back.
