Nasty
While waiting for one of the fur children to do their business I noticed this hanging from a tree on our property. Not sure when it was built, but it almost seems like overnight, granted I don't stare up into the trees all that often.
So I came in and grabbed my 70-300mm and went back and waited for someone/something to emerge. My guess was paper wasps or yellow jackets. Growing bored, after 30 sec, I fired a piece of branch at the nest. Oh my...... A swarm of black emerged, looking for the stick throwing culprit, but luckily I had made my way up the hill and away from the the pissed off wasps. When only a few remained I took some pics.
Google/Wikipedia tells me that they're bald-faced wasps/hornets. A co-worker tells me they're one of the nastier "yellow jacket" wasp family members. Yippy. Now I have a conundrum. Do I wait for Jack Frost to take them out, or go to the hardware store and get a can of wasp whoop-ass??? Ya see, as it gets colder, wasps get "drunk" and stupid (not unlike humans) and have a tendency to take out their frustrations on any passer by they see fit to hassle. My concern is the nest's short distance from the public sidewalk, as well as the house. I've been stung by yellow jackets in the past and they don't stop after one...
