Originally Roman Exeter City Walls
Isca Dumnoniorum was the civitas tribal capital of the Dumnonii.
Originally founded c55AD by the II Augusta as a legionary fortress it was evacuated in c75AD when the legion moved to Caerleon in South Wales.
When the Legion left, the legionary fortress was converted to civilian use as the capital for the Dumnonii.
In the 2nd Century the Roman Fortress wall had become insufficient to house the expanding city. The City expanded and the new wall pictured here encircled the Roman City. It was then used in the Middle Ages and later.
In the foreground is the Memorial to the Exeter Blitz, which was part of the Baedaeker Raids in the Second War Well.
