Mah Jang

This Mah Jang set was acquired by my father probably in the mid 1930s.

At that time, the mass produced sets were made in bamboo, with no plastics readily available.

This set is made from Bakelite and would most likely have been quite expensive.
Today, the mass production is in inexpensive plastic, and the hand made expensive sets are in bamboo!
Full circle.
The set is contained within a beautiful leather case with four, velvet lined compartments for the tiles, and gambling chips in a central insert.

The rule book was printed by The Wing On Company (Shanghai) Ltd.

I leave you with only one of many methods of winning:
"If a player wins by taking the last card from the available tiles, one "double" will be added to the points.
This is termed "To catch the moon from the bottom of the sea" (Hai-ti-low-yeuh)"

May you all catch moons from the bottom of the sea.
