Cómpeta is known as The Pearl of the Axarquía, and for good reason. Situated 18 kilometres from the coast, and 52 kilometres from Málaga, it is the provincial capital. It is situated at 638 metres above sea level in the foothills of La Maroma, the highest peak in the Sierra Tejeda. The population is spread over the southern slopes of the Sierra de Almijara.
Cómpeta has Roman origins. Its name is derived from the Latin phrase Compita-Orum, which means "crossing of roads" and it was a meeting point midway on the trade route between Malaga and Granada.
This is my last view of the town for this year.
