Dog Stinkhorn

Back to the fungi today.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to visit and look at yesterdays 730th blip.

I might have blipped one of these before, it is Mutinus caninus or dog stinkhorn, I only find these in one small area under a pile of broken branches behind our office.

The orange head has the remains of the covering slime which contains the spores. You can see where it has emerged from the 'egg' which is what appears first, the 'egg' is part buried in the ground.

The slime smells a bit which attracts flies to spread the spores. Although the smell is not as strong as it's big brother
