New book club, new book

Went to my first meeting of a book club tonight. I have always resisted book clubs before (mostly I didn't want to be in a group with any parents' of children I teach or have any other teachers in the group...both of which I have achieved with this group!)
I read a lot and I usually discuss books with my mum so I thought why not...
There are five other women, all of whom work (two of us part time) and only one of whom I have not met before. For four of us our children have been to/are at the same primary school/swimming club etc. Two are friends already. We also all live within walking distance of each other.
They are all very busy people but books, wine (I didn't this time, no!), foodie things and a gossip with your shoes kicked off seem to be the connecting thread for the evenings.
So, after us all searching away on our smartphones like a bunch of teenagers, this is the book we have chosen to read for next month's meeting - apparently it is on the Booker prize shortlist... (not always a good thing - I don't always see why they are lauded). So we shall see...
