or Haxan Cloak (to his Mum). When I saw that Fuck Buttons were playing during my Nottingham visit I was tempted, but when I saw Haxan Cloak was supporting it was a done deal. On the day when the bland Mercury Prize nominees were announced, it was great to go out and see two of the most innovative electronic acts in recent years perform at ridiculous volume.
Haxan Cloak playing to a half empty crowd in an unlit room, on crackling equipment, sounding like it was on the verge of malfunction drew from his pot of vintage horror to drive his sound from glitchy drone through to noise assault. When he found his rhythm it was excellent, especially when the sweeping strings of Raven's Lament echoed round the room, but there were moments when I craved the privacy of his songs echoing through my headphones.
The headliners tread a much more euphoric path, their thing is stadium techno (think Orbital) but with all manner of rough edges and warped effects steering things away from mass appeal. It was a pummelling assault for most of the evening and all the more thrilling for it, but towards the end it turned into something more shimmering and beautiful until a suitable brutal encore.
I've featured music from both of these artists a few times, so I'll bring a tune that I heard echoing over the PA system. An artist I've previously disregarded, but at volume it sounded excellent.
