Did you see a hovercraft over there?

In 1999 a hovercraft from the Isle of Wight visited this beach. It ferried passengers to and from St Andrews as they visited the Open Golf Championship which was held on the Links you can see in the distance. The beach is at Carnoustie and the competition was won by Paul Lawrie after an exciting play off. The world remembers the event as the one where Jean Van de Velde virtually threw away the match on the final hole after spending some time in the Barry Burn and acheiving a triple-bogey seven.
