Frigiliana
Seven kilometres north of Nerja, perched high on a ridge in the Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama mountains, is the picturesque town of Frigiliana, undoubtedly one of the best of the typical Andalucían ‘White Villages’.
The hill overlooking the village, El Fuerte, was the scene of the final battle, and defeat, of the Axarquia Moors in their rebellion of 1569.
On top of the hill are a few remains of the old fort from which it is said that many Moors threw themselves from it rather than be captured by the Christians.
The village is a maze of narrow, cobbled streets lined with white-washed houses and best explored on foot. Do be warned though, most of the streets are steep and some of them are very steep. Small, dark alleys often lead to a bar or restaurant!
The old historical centre of Frigiliana, distinctively Moorish in appearance and design, is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets and alleyways, a great place to wander aimlessly…or even with a purpose.
Three hundred metres above sea level and built on the side of a mountain, many of the streets are quite steep, or very steep in some cases, all adding to the charm and character of this picturesque little village.
Exploring these narrow streets you will often find small shops, bars and restaurants, almost hidden away but well worth discovering
Stopping at regular intervals for a delicious ‘tapa’ is always to be recommended, just make sure everyone orders something different so you get to try a lot of different dishes.
The houses may all be whitewashed but there is an abundance of colour as, in common with many similar Moorish hilltop villages, colourful plants abound on window ledges, balconies, in windows, hanging baskets and on the streets themselves.
