Ooops!
That'll teach me. I'd brought my camera stuff in from the car and casually leant the tripod against the cupboard next to the computer table with camera still attached. I turned around to put the camera backpack down only to hear the camera sliding along the cupboard and hitting the edge of the computer table with a resounding 'crack'.
I guess that's one of the main reasons for a UV filter, to protect the lens. I am, of course, grateful that it did its job but why didn't I spread the tripod legs or take the camera off the tripod; just think would be a good start. If anyone out there can be as careless as me, please put a UV filter on your lens.
