At Trumpet: Tiny Hannika Sumner

H.art trail stopped a crossroads.

The Trumpet Crossroads studio and tea room. A place where you can wander in the direction of a scrumptious snack or wander into gallery and absorb.

I love this trail, its throwing up some surprises indeed. It's so far been about British Art History. Every artist and studio brings forth a fascinating contribution. A story behind every potters wheel, every artists easel, every letterpress block, every fabricators hammer. There's a wonderful cross reference of skills, mixed mediums, and most importantly the exhibitors are not just established practitioners.

Meet Hannika Sumner. She's a small scale forged metal artist. Her intricate pieces using a mixed media approach of natural materials and wire and resin. Hannika possesses a remarkable attention to detail. She has a love of botanical illustrations, in particular Earnst Haeckel sketches. A tiny acorn shell filled with resin containing a single seed head. Another, a poppy seed head outlined, its lost none of the precious natural detail. Hannika's empathy and imagination with natural form allows free play in her work. Little curvaceous swings, hollowed out shells, swirling curls unveils the fairy fantasy between humans and nature.

What's more remarkable, is that Hannika Sumner is only 22 years old. Her work sits comfortably alongside other exhibitors. That's a testament to clever curating. I love to see young artists being given space amongst more established work. All art inspires, regardless of age, experience or background. Hannika Sumner and students like her, will in her time be contributors to British Art History. x
