Waiting for the bats

We ventured out this evening to the village of Herne for a bat walk with an expert chiropterologist. While we waited for the light to drop and the pipistrelles to emerge, we were treated to a very nice sunset.

Common pipistrelles and soprano pipistrelles were soon whizzing around us and it was magical to be able to hear them using bat detector boxes which tuned their high frequency echo-location calls down to audible levels.
