The greater good
David Miles, former chief archaeologist at English Heritage. What David hasn't dug up probably isn't worth the spade. A fascinating chap, author of several books, including this one that I've just ordered.
I wish I'd met him before I'd written my history of work. He had lots to say about that. David's wife Gwyn is the director of Somerset House Trust. I met them today at a party at the home of Peter and Esther McGarrick in Grittleton, a lovely little village not far from Castle Coombe. As one of the locals said: "You won't find anyone on income support here." Everyone seemed to know each other and there was a lot of talk about the next village panto. I was reminded a little bit of Sanford where a core of villagers are determined to work for the "greater good".
I've known Peter since our paths crossed in Rio in 1996. He'd just sailed the Atlantic on 3Com, a BT Challenge boat that I was joining for the next leg to Wellington. A former lawyer, he set up a business a while back called Quicklook books, great primers for anyone seeking an insight in to various specialisms.
Rather unsportingly, after taking my blip yesterday, Pippa jumped out of the pan so I had to settle for toast again. She came with me to Grittleton where she was a big hit with the locals. I wish I hadn't worn my hoodie. Gill comes back tomorrow. I'd better find the instructions for the iron, vac, dishwasher, duster........!
