شارع الرينبو (Rainbow St.)
Today my roommate Kendra and I decided to explore Rainbow Street in Amman. We took our Arabic books and laptops and went to the "Turtle Green Tea Bar" on rainbow Street. Its an all English cafe. It served English food and was everything British. Even had British plugs, which are rarely used here. It was a very cute and nice little place to do some WIFI and study.
Rainbow Street (Arabic: شارع الرينبو), It was originally called "Abu Bakr al Siddiq street" and it is in the historic area of Jabal Amman, which is near the center of downtown Amman. Rainbow Street has several landmarks including the Embassy of Saudi Arabia and the British Council building the headquarters of the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company and the cinema (Rainbow Cinema) that the street was renamed after.
Rainbow Street contains numerous companies and shops, among them the Center for Studies on the Built Environment and the headquarters of the Jordan River Foundation, which we walked around in and saw amazing art and what is considered some of the most authentic gifts/crafts in Jordan. I took pictures of some of them. (They will be on flickr today or tomorrow)
Rainbow Street is also home to sites of Jordan's history, such as the al-Mufti House, the residence of King Talal and the home of former military commander and Prime Minister Zaid ibn Shaker. Kendra and I didn't spend too much time walking around today, but we will go back. Its a beautiful and quiet area that also has a wonderful view of the city. We walked through it and window shopped while taking mental inventory of where might be fun to hang out later.
We then went and joined the gym down the street from Qasid and then had a great workout. It was a nice and productive day! Back to classes tomorrow! Getting used to the Friday and Saturday being my weekends and going to school on Sundays is very odd still. Gonna take some time to get used too!
