The road less travelled: Sheep's Head Way 1
I have a new project, a new idea. I feel there is a book that needs wrtiting about the Sheep's Head Peninsula where I am fortunate to live. I'm not entirely sure what kind of book yet but am willing to give it a go. I have decided that the best way to do it is to walk it, take loads of photos and scribble away as I go and the rest may just come. I'm taking the Sheep's Head Way as a my starting point - a walking route of 175 kilometres, very clearly set out and maintained, the winner of a European Award of Excellence and fully mapped out in Himself's excellent website. . I have walked most of it already but not consecutively.
We decided to start today though the weather was not looking especially promising. The route begins in Bantry and the first leg is to Boolteenagh 7.3km but high up in the hills. It was wonderful. We only got slightly damp twice, the first time we took the opportunity to pop into the West Lodge Hotel for a coffee and the second time we sheltered behind some rock on the beach at Beach and ate cheese and tomato rolls. This first leg takes you through the grounds of Bantry House, down a long leafy avenue and passed the amazing ornate Italian gardens, then out into the countryside. Down little green lanes, across yellow painted stiles, then boggy trackways rich with blackberries and sloes, across cattle filled fields, passed yappy terriers, through the silver gates to a holy well , up slippy steps to admire the extraordinary offerings at an old mass rock, passed a brightly painted house house offering yoga lessons, onwards down the road where camomile grows in the middle and a quick detour to admire the mudstone formations at Beach, then up a tiny winding pot holed road, with breath taking views and thumping hearts, a quick chat with the farmer in his tractor who told us about Red Shank weed growing in pretty abundance in his field, then high up onto the rugged heather rich moorland of Boolteenagh . Whether or not anything comes of this, it will be enjoyable doing the research.
I've even managed a swim too- it's getting quite chilly now.
